Durango Colorado is a great mountain town. There are around 14,000 residents, but there is a lot to do in and around Durango.
Scenery: Situated in the mountains Durango is in the San Juan Mountains and is surrounded by beautiful scenery, with lots of trees, valleys, animals, and mountain peaks.
Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad: One of the most scenic railroads in the world is the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
Animas River: The Animas River runs through downtown Durango. It offers great fly fishing, white water rafting, kayaking and canoeing.
Skiing: There are 5 major ski areas close to Durango. The best known of these is Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort, which is about 25 minutes north of downtown.
Mesa Verde National Park: About 35 miles west of Durango is Mesa Verde National Park, which features numerous ruins of homes and villages dating back about 800 years. Mesa Verde National Park is best known for spectacular cliff dwellings, which are structures built into cliff walls.
